A strong arctic front will push through WNC on Tuesday and behind it, there is an increasing likelihood of Northwest Flow snow showers into Wednesday. Some higher elevation locations could even switch to snow on the front end as this anafront type system push cold air out ahead of the main precipitation. Then winds will gust over 30mph after the front pushes through, and backside moisture that is aided by a strong high pressure over the Great Lakes strains out over the Appalachian Mountains. Near record cold temperatures are likely on Wednesday AM with a current record low of 13 set back in 1911 in Downtown Asheville. This could very well be broken. Below you can see my snowfall projection map from this event. I do not believe that it will be a significant snowfall, but temperatures in the mid teens and high winds will be the big story.
This map could change over the next few days as more model data become available, but as of now these are my current thoughts on where snow will fall.
Prepare To Winterize Your Home
Protect Your Pipes
drain any hoses around the home, and disconnect them. Consider buy protective coverings for your outdoor facets.
Close Foundation Vents
This will also help protect pipes. Go around your home (if it is built on a crawlspace) and close the foundation vents. This will help better insulate your home during winter.
Create A Space To Bring In Outdoor Pets
It is going to get cold this coming week, and you will need to prepare a place for pets who are usually kept outdoors. Contrary to popular belief, most dog fur coats are not sufficient to weather the NC mountain winters. Please consider bringing your pets indoors.
Seal Any Open Spaces
Walk your home checking your doors and windows and place adequate material in locations that are not completely sealed. For your windows you could add some extra caulk, or at a door you could consider adding weather stripping.
Check Your Fireplace
Ensure that your chimney is cleaned, and that you have wood ready to burn. If your fireplace is gas, ensure that you have adequate fuel for the winter and check to make sure your pilot light is light.
After A Mild Weekend Near Record Cold Is Coming To WNC
Below you can see the 0z Euro ensemble temperature projection and as you can see at the Asheville Airport it projects a temp of 16 on Wednesday AM. This will kill anything and everything that survived this mornings frost. Please prepare for this cold!
