An interesting weather pattern will unfold over the next several days across WNC as an Upper Level Low meets with moisture from the Atlantic Ocean. The main threat for rainfall and storms will be today for WNC, but then unseasonably cool temperatures will set in as the Upper Level Low flexes its muscles. So for Monday & Tuesday afternoon you can expect high temperatures to only push into to upper 60’s to lower 70’s. This will be 10-15 degrees below average for most locations during this time of the year, so it will be noticeable! First and foremost though let’s talk about the storm chances today. Below you can see a depiction of the most recent Nam 3km and how it shows storms unfolding later this evening around 6-8pm.
Types Of Severe Weather?
What can you expect tonight around WNC? The main threat with this system will be strong winds and heavy rain. I do think that there is a slight chance for hail to be created, but lapse rates are not very impressive so heavy rainfall will likely be the mode of precipitation. Some wind gusts of over 30mph could be possible as downburst winds are manifested by heavy rainfall. Below you can see the most recent precipitation totals courtesy of the Nam 3km.
Mid 60’s to 70 Degrees High Temp For Monday In WNC
That is right! Usually we are pushing closer to the 90’s at this point in time during the afternoons, but with this Upper Level Low overhead, it will feel like Spring again! Below you can see the high temperature for tomorrow projected by the Nam 3km. As you can see, it only shows the Asheville Airport reaching the mid 60’s tomorrow! My best guess is that these temps are a bit low, but highs on the upper 60’s or low 70’s appear very possible! It is going to feel nice around the mountains of WNC!
Extended Cool Down
Below you can see the most recent European Ensemble temperature projections for the next 10 days. Focus on the next three days and notice how the temperature will struggle to reach 70 degrees. This is due to the Upper Level Low pressure moving overhead.
Porch Sitting Weather On Tap
This will be the perfect couple of mornings to sit out on the porch and enjoy a sunrise! With temps in the mid 50’s each morning it won’t feel extremely cold, but just enough to make you want to throw on a sweatshirt and your slippers. This happens every now and then, and is one of the great things about living in the mountains. Enjoy your break from the heat though because it will return next weekend! Have a great week!
